General Motors plans to lay off 3,400 workers at its electric vehicle facilities, with over a thousand job cuts at a Detroit plant, according to a report from the Detroit News. The automaker did not comment, but 1,200 employees at the Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center will lose their jobs based on seniority.

Jesse Lee, senior advisor for Climate Power, attributes the layoffs to policies from President Donald Trump’s administration. Lee claims, “Trump’s full-scale assault on clean energy manufacturing is serving Americans with pink slips and skyrocketing energy bills, while giving China a competitive edge in the automotive industry.” He believes Republicans will face repercussions for supporting anti-electric vehicle policies in the 2026 midterm election.

Earlier this month, GM scrapped plans for a $55 million hydrogen fuel cell plant in Detroit, which was expected to create 140 jobs. Crain’s Detroit Business reported the cancellation was due to insufficient hydrogen infrastructure and a prolonged shift to electric vehicles. The Department of Energy also announced plans to terminate funding awards for 223 projects.
