Arizona Sees Rise in Unemployment Rate but Gains Jobs Across Key Sectors

In September, Arizona’s unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, marking an increase of 0.4% compared to the previous year. Despite this uptick, the state experienced a considerable addition of over 37,000 jobs during the same period.

According to Doug Walls from the state’s Office of Economic Opportunity, “Annual job gains were recorded in eight of Arizona’s 12 major industry sectors, led by healthcare and social assistance, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and financial activities.” These sectors have contributed significantly to the state’s employment landscape, indicating robust growth in various areas of the economy.

Conversely, certain sectors witnessed a downturn in employment figures. Walls noted that the government, information, manufacturing, and trade and utilities sectors experienced a decline in job numbers compared to the previous year.
