Arizona Senator Reflects on a Tumultuous Year Amid Presidential Controversy

As Americans welcomed 2026, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly took to social media to reflect on the challenges faced in the preceding year. His message highlighted the political turbulence of 2025, including a controversial call for his execution by President Donald Trump.

In a candid remark, Kelly, a Democrat, described 2025 as “a really challenging year, for a lot of different reasons,” emphasizing the impact of Trump’s second term. This sentiment was echoed in his New Year’s Day message, where he urged, “2026 is our opportunity to turn the page and put our country on a better path forward. That work starts right now.” Tweet

Kelly, a former Navy captain, had previously joined other Democratic lawmakers in releasing a video in November aimed at reminding military personnel of their duty to refuse illegal orders. This action prompted a severe response from Trump, who suggested the lawmakers deserved the death penalty.

“The First Amendment is something that he seems to — could give a crap about,” Kelly remarked in response to Trump’s comments. He added, “He made that perfectly clear when he said I should be hanged! I mean, hanged for saying something that was truthful, and just basically stating the law.”

In addition to his criticisms of Trump’s response to the video, Kelly accused the president of prioritizing personal and familial gain over pressing national issues. He highlighted the neglect of critical challenges such as housing, food, and healthcare costs that impact many American citizens.
