Passing of Richard Whitmer, Influential Michigan Leader and Father of Governor Gretchen Whitmer
Richard Whitmer, a prominent figure in Michigan’s government and business sectors, has passed away. Known for his influential roles, Richard Whitmer was the father of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who expressed profound gratitude for his guidance and support throughout her life.
“He was my best friend, most trusted counselor, and next door neighbor until I moved into the Governor’s Residence,” Governor Whitmer stated. “I would not be where I am and who I am without my dad. Today, I’m sad, but I’m grateful too. I’m grateful for the time we got to spend together, for the things he taught me, and the stories I’ll carry with me forever.”
Richard Whitmer’s career spanned various significant roles, including time in the state Legislature and a position in the cabinet of Republican Governor William Milliken as the commerce department director. He later became the CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where he is remembered for guiding Michigan’s largest health insurer through challenging times. The Blue Cross Blue Shield headquarters in Detroit bears his name as a testament to his impact.
Raised in a household with a blend of political ideologies, Governor Whitmer often reflects on her bipartisan upbringing. Her mother, Sharon Whitmer, served as a top lawyer for Democratic Attorney General Frank Kelley and passed away in 2002. Richard Whitmer is credited with influencing his daughter’s path toward public service, diverting her interest from a potential career in sports broadcasting. “I haven’t looked back since,” she remarked.
Rick Cole, a former colleague at Blue Cross Blue Shield, recalls Richard Whitmer’s advocacy for workforce diversity. “He was an early and active advocate for a diverse workforce, for a diverse leadership team and I think the company and the people of Michigan benefited significantly,” Cole said.
Former Governor Jim Blanchard, a Democrat, highlighted Richard Whitmer’s adept understanding of the intersection between government and business. “He was obviously very skillful — very understated,” Blanchard noted, emphasizing Whitmer’s unassuming nature despite his significant influence.
At the age of 85, Richard Whitmer leaves behind a legacy that extends through his three children, Gretchen, Richard, and Liz Whitmer, as well as seven grandchildren.
