Michigan’s Selfridge Air Base Awaits Major Upgrades with $638 Million Funding Request

The Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County is poised for significant upgrades as Michigan Representative John James seeks $638 million from Congress. This funding would support essential infrastructure improvements ahead of the base’s transition to accommodate advanced aircraft.

Earlier this month, the state House approved a $152 million supplemental spending plan, setting the stage for the base to welcome 21 new F-15EX Eagle II fighters starting in fiscal year 2028, followed by a squadron of KC-46A Pegasus refueling tankers by 2030. The overall modernization effort is estimated to cost approximately $1 billion over the next five to seven years.

In a letter addressed to the House Committee on Appropriations, Representative James emphasized the importance of securing this funding for the base’s future. “To operationalize these advanced airframes and secure Selfridge’s vital role in protecting the northern border, immediate and comprehensive infrastructure modernization is imperative,” he stated.

James, who has a background as an Army helicopter pilot with service in Iraq, highlighted the significance of the new aircraft but stressed that additional resources are needed for a seamless transition. “While the commitment to base new aircraft at Selfridge is a significant victory, the mission is incomplete until these 21st-century facilities are in place. We must ensure the Air Force provides an executable and fully funded plan to support the Citizen-Airman of the 127th Wing as they defend our nation,” he wrote.

Currently, James is not seeking reelection for his U.S. House seat but is instead focusing on his gubernatorial campaign, having previously run for the U.S. Senate in both 2018 and 2020.

The proposed allocation of the $638 million for Selfridge Air Base includes the following:

  • F15EX Maintenance Complex (8 Bay, phased): $190 million
  • KC46 Dual Bay Hangar Complex: $218 million
  • KC46 Aircrew Training Complex: $34 million
  • KC46 Squadron Operations: $28 million
  • MCCA Aircraft Arresting System, Allied Support: $6.6 million
  • Taxiway Bravo Extension: $24 million
  • Taxiway Alpha Extension: $28 million
  • Mitigate Runway Encroachment: $110 million
