Arizona Educators Push for Public School Funding Amid Legislative Stalemate

Amid ongoing debates at the Arizona state Capitol, educators are intensifying efforts to encourage lawmakers to prioritize comprehensive funding for public schools. The Arizona Education Association (AEA), under the leadership of President Marisol Garcia, is at the forefront of this advocacy.

Garcia highlighted the urgency of renewing Proposition 123, a measure that previously allocated funds from the State Land Trust to support public education until its expiration last year. “Put to the ballot a Proposition 123 renewal that would bring in over $250 million into our schools — new money,” Garcia emphasized. “That’s new money. It’s good, new money that we need to make sure that we meet the needs of every individual community.”

The renewal of Prop. 123 remains uncertain, as Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs recently accused Republican leaders of hindering serious discussions on the matter. This disagreement led Governor Hobbs to withdraw from budget negotiations with Republican lawmakers, a move that underscores the current impasse over school funding.
