Arizona returns to the Final Four after 25 years, with standout performances from freshman Koa Peat and veteran Jaden Bradley.
UA makes the Final Four for 1st time in 25 years

In a thrilling showdown that has rekindled Arizona’s championship hopes, the Wildcats have advanced to the Final Four for the first time in over two decades. Fueled by an impressive 20-point performance from freshman Koa Peat, Arizona triumphed over Purdue with a 79-64 victory in the NCAA Tournament’s West Region final on Saturday night.

Guided by coach Tommy Lloyd, Arizona (36-2) has emerged as a formidable contender thanks to a blend of promising freshman talent, headlined by Peat, and seasoned players like Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley. “Just being a kid from Arizona, to take this team to a Final Four, man, it’s a blessing,” Peat expressed, celebrating his recognition as the region’s Most Outstanding Player. “I’m proud of these guys. We worked for this. We’re not done yet.”

The Wildcats showcased their versatility by executing a flawless offensive game against Arkansas in the Sweet 16 and then stifling Purdue’s efficient offense. Purdue, despite its strong season, struggled against Arizona’s defense, managing only a 38% shooting rate and their second-lowest score of the season.

An early second-half surge from Arizona, capped by Anthony Dell’Orso’s three-pointer, transformed a seven-point halftime deficit into a six-point lead. The Wildcats maintained their momentum with key plays, including Brayden Burries’ three-pointer and Ivan Kharchenkov’s layup, extending their lead to 11 points.

Peat’s emphatic dunk, which brought the score to 68-55 with less than six minutes left on the clock, secured Arizona’s place in Indianapolis, riding a 13-game winning streak. Coach Lloyd commended his team’s resilience, stating, “We had a little bad stretch at the end of the first half. These guys, winning’s in their DNA. Like I always say, they’re way better players than I am a coach. I’m so proud of them.”

This marks a significant milestone for Arizona, which last reached the Final Four in 2001 under Lute Olson, only to fall short in the championship game against Duke. Since then, the Wildcats had faced five consecutive losses in the Elite Eight. Lloyd, who took over from Sean Miller in 2021, has already led this team to a school-record number of wins in a single season.

Kharchenkov contributed 18 points, while Bradley and Burries each added 14. Despite a promising first half, Purdue’s senior trio, including Braden Smith, were unable to sustain their lead. They combined for a 12-for-38 shooting performance, with Smith scoring 13 points, Trey Kaufman-Renn 10, and Fletcher Loyer 8.

Arizona now awaits the winner of the Michigan vs. Tennessee matchup, scheduled for Sunday, to determine their opponent in the national semifinals on Saturday. For more details on the tournament, visit the March Madness hub.
