Maricopa County Records First West Nile Virus Fatality of the Season
Health authorities in Maricopa County have reported the first death linked to West Nile virus this season, noting an increase in confirmed cases compared to the previous year.
The deceased was identified as an elderly man with pre-existing health conditions. This highlights the increased risk that the virus poses to individuals with underlying health issues.
While the majority of those infected with West Nile virus remain asymptomatic, approximately 20% may experience flu-like symptoms. According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, severe complications or fatalities occur in roughly 1 out of every 150 cases.
The virus, primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, has resulted in 17 confirmed cases so far this year, a significant rise from the four cases reported during the same period last year.
