Mexico Marks International Firearms Destruction Day with a Major Event in Sonora
In a significant move to combat gun violence, Mexico’s military undertook the destruction of more than 900 firearms in Sonora, just south of the Arizona border, on Thursday, coinciding with International Firearms Destruction Day.
The operation took place at a military base in Hermosillo, the state capital, where troops dismantled firearms and disposed of over 400,000 rounds of ammunition.
This initiative in Hermosillo was part of a broader national event in Mexico City, directed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The Mexican government had previously initiated a gun buyback program intended to reduce the number of firearms in circulation by allowing citizens to exchange guns for monetary compensation. As a result, more than 2,000 firearms have been collected.
With stringent gun laws in place, Mexico faces challenges as over 70% of weapons used by organized crime groups within the nation reportedly originate from the United States.
