The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has launched a series of advertisements across several states, aiming to influence public perception regarding Medicaid and undocumented immigrants.
These advertisements focus on Democratic Senate candidates from Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Michigan. They criticize these candidates for their lack of support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), which the NRSC claims was instrumental in preventing undocumented immigrants from accessing Medicaid benefits.
Despite these claims, federal law already prohibits undocumented individuals from enrolling in Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) programs. Instances of undocumented individuals being mistakenly enrolled in these programs are exceedingly rare, as pointed out by health policy experts.
Organizations like the Kaiser Family Foundation and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy have consistently refuted the NRSC’s assertions regarding the OBBB.
While OBBB does not impact undocumented immigrants’ access to Medicaid, it significantly alters the program. Over the next decade, the legislation is set to cut approximately $1 trillion from Medicaid, potentially causing up to 12 million Americans to lose their coverage. These cuts are largely intended to finance tax breaks favoring higher-income individuals.
The bill has received backing from notable political figures, including Sens. Jon Husted (OH) and Dan Sullivan (AK), and Reps. Ashley Hinson (IA) and Mike Collins (GA), all of whom are seeking Senate seats. Additionally, former New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu and former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers have voiced their support for the legislation.
In North Carolina, Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley expressed his willingness to support the OBBB, stating he would have voted for it “in a heartbeat.”
Public opinion, however, remains largely unfavorable towards the OBBB. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll, 64% of the general population and 71% of independents hold a negative view of the legislation.
Looking ahead, President Donald Trump has suggested further tax reductions and cuts to government programs should Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate following the 2026 elections.
