Chris Swanson on His Vision for Michigan’s Future as 2026 Gubernatorial Candidate

With the 2026 Michigan primary rapidly approaching, voters will soon have the opportunity to decide which candidates will move forward to the November election for governor. Among the Democratic contenders is Chris Swanson, currently serving as the Genesee County sheriff. In an in-depth interview with Morning Edition‘s Doug Tribou, Swanson outlined his priorities and addressed various key issues facing the state.

Priorities for Office

When asked about his primary goals if elected, Swanson emphasized a commitment to “protect, serve, and unify.” He detailed plans for a comprehensive audit at Huron Valley, the establishment of an Epstein file to give victims a voice, and a six-month moratorium on rate hikes from DTE and Consumers Energy to reassess state energy policies.

Immigration Policies

Swanson, a long-time law enforcement officer, expressed criticism towards the methods employed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the Trump administration. He assured that Michigan law enforcement would be transparent and accountable, stating, “Our public trust is hard to build and easy to lose.”

Approach to Data Center Projects

On the topic of large-scale data centers, Swanson, a union-endorsed candidate, highlighted the importance of balancing development with environmental concerns. He proposed a color-coded system to classify regions based on infrastructure and community interest, ensuring transparency and public input in project approvals.

State vs. Local Authority

Swanson emphasized collaboration over conflict in the relationship between state and local governments. He advocated for an ally relationship, suggesting that state involvement should support rather than dictate local decisions, particularly in economic development.

Economic Development Strategies

Addressing economic growth, Swanson called for greater accountability and transparency within the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). He proposed auditing the MEDC to ensure taxpayer funds are effectively used to foster high-quality jobs, criticizing current practices for lacking transparency.

Business Challenges

Swanson, who has experience as a business owner, acknowledged the challenges faced by Michigan businesses. He cited his own experiences with diverse ventures and criticized the state’s regulatory environment, arguing that it should be more supportive of entrepreneurs.

Leadership in Law Enforcement

While acknowledging reports of a toxic environment within the Michigan State Police leadership, Swanson refrained from making definitive judgments without direct involvement but highlighted the need for addressing any internal issues to restore trust.

Policy Differences with Governor Whitmer

Although Swanson shares many ideological positions with Governor Whitmer, he noted his unique background and innovative approaches to issues such as crime prevention and education. He promised a new energy and perspective, beginning January 1, 2027, should he be elected.
