Republican Candidate’s Tax Policy Raises Questions Over Exemptions
Jeanine Driscoll, a Republican contender for New York’s 4th congressional district, is under scrutiny for supporting a property tax increase that did not affect her $2 million residence in Southampton.
During her tenure from 2020 to 2026 as the Hempstead Receiver of Taxes, alongside town supervisor Don Clavin, taxes were consistently increased under their administration. Records indicate that this was a period marked by annual tax hikes for Hempstead residents.
In 2024, the Town of Hempstead Board sanctioned a notable 12.1% rise in tax levies, resulting in an additional $42.2 million in annual revenue for the town. This increase, which applied to property taxes, is reported to be the largest in the town’s record since 2013.
While Driscoll’s $1 million residence in Hempstead fell under this tax increase, her more costly property in Southampton remained unaffected by the change.
Notably, Driscoll’s Southampton home is located outside the 4th District, residing instead within New York’s 1st District, represented by Republican Rep. Nick LaLota.
As the election approaches, Driscoll is set to challenge the current Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen in the general election.
