Amid rising concerns over environmental impacts and resource strains, the Hualapai Tribe has formally opposed the establishment of data centers on its reservation lands. This decision, made on August 20 through a resolution by the tribal council, highlights the tribe’s proactive stance in safeguarding their natural resources and community well-being.
The Hualapai Tribe’s announcement, detailed in a recent press release, cites severe water shortages along the Colorado River as a significant factor in their opposition. The tribe also pointed out potential negative consequences of such facilities, including light pollution and wastewater discharge, which could disrupt the environmental balance and community life.
While the release stops short of naming any specific technology companies that might have approached the tribe, it reflects a broader national sentiment. Across the United States, there’s growing resistance to data center expansions, with bipartisan calls for temporary construction moratoriums gaining traction.
This recent stance by the Hualapai Tribe is not their first encounter with industrial development proposals. Back in 2019, the tribe opposed a lithium mining project proposed by an Australian company near sacred hot springs. They took legal action, suing the federal government over the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s decision to approve the project, arguing it failed to protect tribal cultural resources. The mining company eventually withdrew their proposal.
