As July 2026 unfolded, all 100 counties in North Carolina saw an uptick in unemployment rates, indicating a broad impact across the state. Edgecombe and Halifax Counties recorded the highest unemployment rates at 5.5 percent, whereas Currituck County stood out with the lowest rate at 2.8 percent. In the metropolitan areas, all 15 reported increases, with Rocky Mount facing the highest unemployment at 4.9 percent and Raleigh experiencing the lowest at 3.2 percent. North Carolina’s overall unemployment rate, unadjusted for seasonal variations, was 3.7 percent.

Comparing current figures to the previous year, 90 counties experienced a decline in unemployment rates, four saw increases, and six remained steady. Among the metro areas, 14 showed a decrease in rates over the year, with one maintaining its rate.
In terms of employment numbers, the not seasonally adjusted data reveal a drop in employed workers by 44,910, bringing the total to 5,007,249 in July. Conversely, the unemployed population rose by 9,044 to reach 193,903. Since July 2025, these figures translate to a decrease of 110,239 employed individuals, with the unemployed count decreasing by 24,413.
