Shaheen Enters Congressional Race with Healthcare Reform Focus
Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, has launched her campaign for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, driven by her commitment to healthcare reform. Her decision was catalyzed by Donald Trump’s appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic, as Health and Human Services Secretary.
“That was a bridge too far for me,” Shaheen stated in an interview with the Granite Post. She emphasized the government’s role in safeguarding citizen health, criticizing Kennedy’s stance on science and vaccines. Shaheen aims to replace Kennedy and promote evidence-based healthcare policies in the state.
With Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas opting to contest for the Senate seat vacated by her mother, Shaheen saw a clear opportunity to step into the congressional race. Her campaign, which she officially launched after winning the Democratic primary on September 8, sets her up against Republican Anthony DiLorenzo, a major Trump supporter and businessman.
Personal Healthcare Challenges Shape Shaheen’s Campaign
The importance of healthcare is deeply personal for Shaheen, whose family has been directly impacted by medical challenges. Her grandfather’s struggle with polio and her daughter Elle’s near-death experience with Type 1 diabetes have fueled her advocacy for medical research and healthcare access.
Recalling a critical moment in her daughter’s health journey, Shaheen shared how Elle narrowly escaped severe diabetic ketoacidosis at age 8. This experience underscored for Shaheen the necessity of a robust healthcare system and sparked her involvement with Breakthrough T1D, an organization dedicated to diabetes research.
Shaheen is concerned about the potential loss of Medicaid for up to 29,000 Granite Staters and the rising insurance premiums following cuts to ACA subsidies. “It’s outrageous,” she remarked, stressing the dangers of misinformation about vaccines and cuts to critical health research.
Economic Policies and Tariff Rollbacks
Beyond healthcare, Shaheen is advocating for economic reforms favoring the middle class. She calls for taxing the ultra-wealthy to alleviate rising costs of living, including healthcare, energy, and groceries. Shaheen highlighted the disparity in tax burdens, referencing corporations like Palantir that evade federal taxes while average citizens shoulder heavier burdens.
To address housing affordability, Shaheen supports expanding tax credits to aid developers in building affordable housing. Her experience is informed by her husband Craig Welch’s role at the Portsmouth Housing Authority.
Shaheen also targets Trump’s tariffs, advocating for their rollback and reimbursement for affected businesses. She noted the tariffs’ adverse impact on New Hampshire’s small businesses and international events like Laconia’s Motorcycle Week.
Foreign Policy and Social Issues
Shaheen has criticized Trump’s foreign policy, particularly the military actions in Iran, demanding a congressional vote on the matter. “President Trump promised he would end forever wars,” she stated, calling for transparency in military engagements.
On reproductive rights, Shaheen seeks to restore freedoms eroded by current policies. She is committed to championing national legislation for reproductive autonomy, tying it to the state’s values of personal freedom and healthcare access.
The Family’s Role in Shaheen’s Campaign
Shaheen’s campaign is a family affair, with her husband and children fully supporting her congressional aspirations. Her daughters actively contribute to campaign efforts, particularly in social media outreach.
Drawing from her own experiences assisting her mother’s political campaigns, Shaheen enters the race well-aware of its challenges but buoyed by her family’s unwavering support. “I knew what I was getting into,” she said, appreciating her family’s encouragement in this endeavor.
