Arizona’s New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: A Step Toward a Greener Future
Arizona has made significant strides in supporting electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with the opening of three new charging stations, funded by a federal initiative. These installations are part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which allocated over $76 million to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to bolster EV charging accessibility across the state.
The newly operational charging stations are strategically positioned along southern Arizona’s interstates, with two located near Tucson and one situated outside Yuma. These sites are part of a larger plan to address EV range concerns by providing accessible charging options within three miles of major highways.
According to Garin Groff, an ADOT spokesperson, the placement of these stations is intentional. “Most of the stations will be at places like gas stations where people are already stopping for other needs,” Groff explained. This strategic positioning ensures that drivers can conveniently charge their vehicles while attending to other necessities such as purchasing snacks or drinks.
In total, approximately 80 charging stations are planned to be developed at private businesses across the state. This initiative aims to ensure that no more than 90 miles separate each charging point once the program is fully realized. The stations will be equipped with both North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs, compatible with a wide range of EVs currently in use, and capable of charging a vehicle in around 30 minutes.
Federal funding contributes 80% of the project costs, with the remaining expenses covered by developers. All charging stations will be privately owned and operated, and they are expected to be installed at various types of businesses, including gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, and hotels.
Groff also mentioned that two additional stations are scheduled to open later this year along Interstate 40 in Seligman and Holbrook, with ADOT actively seeking bids for 49 more stations.
