American Freed from Russian Prison Amid High-Level Diplomatic Talks

An unexpected development unfolded as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the release of Stephen Hubbard, an American detained in Russia, following a request from former U.S. President Donald Trump. This move comes during pivotal discussions between Russian officials and a White House envoy aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old Michigan resident, was apprehended by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine in 2022. After a closed trial in 2024, he was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison for allegedly serving as a mercenary for the Ukrainian army. However, on the eve of negotiations in Saint Petersburg, Putin declared that Hubbard was released and had already reached Pulkovo Airport in the city.

The talks in Russia’s historic capital involved the White House envoy, Steve Witkoff, with a focus on U.S. strategies to end the war in Ukraine. Before these discussions, Trump publicly stated he had appealed to Putin for Hubbard’s release. This move aligns with the U.S.’s formal designation of Hubbard as wrongfully detained, a stance taken during the Biden administration.

Trump’s successful intervention coincides with his decision to lift certain sanctions on Moscow, a strategy accompanied by critiques of Ukraine. These actions highlight a shift in U.S. diplomatic efforts to broker peace in the region.
