ASU offers college aid, resources to LA high schooler affected by the wildfires

In a bid to support students affected by the California wildfires, Arizona State University (ASU) is modifying its admission process for high school students from the Los Angeles area. The university aims to provide a smoother transition into higher education for those who have faced significant challenges due to the natural disaster.

ASU officials recently engaged in discussions with educational leaders from Los Angeles schools to address concerns surrounding the academic future of students who have experienced the loss of their homes. “A majority of the superintendents were most concerned about just the disruption and added stress to an already stressful situation called: searching for college,” noted Matt Lopez, ASU’s executive director of admissions.

Prospective students impacted by the wildfires are encouraged to reach out to ASU for more information on extended application deadlines, personalized assistance with the application process, and guidance on managing educational expenses. Further details can be found here.

With approximately 20,000 Californians either attending ASU physically or participating in its online programs, the university recognizes its duty to assist the communities it serves. Lopez emphasized, “Do people say, ‘ASU’s just trying to get more students?’ Well, we’ve never denied that our purpose is to provide educational opportunity.”

Current ASU students affected by the wildfires have access to support through the university’s counseling and academic advising services. They are also eligible to apply for financial aid via ASU’s emergency fund, which has been a lifeline for many students since its inception.
