Authorities Seek Public’s Help in Search for Savannah Guthrie’s Missing Mother
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has prompted an urgent search by authorities in Tucson. The 84-year-old was reportedly taken from her home against her will over the weekend, raising concerns for her safety due to her need for medication.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized the urgency of finding Nancy Guthrie, last seen Saturday night, citing the potential danger to her health without her medication. At a recent news conference, the sheriff appealed to the public for information, although he refrained from disclosing specific details to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
The investigation has involved examining reports of potential ransom demands and utilizing surveillance footage and pacemaker data. However, Sheriff Nanos did not elaborate on whether the incident was random or targeted, nor did he provide details on the evidence collected from Guthrie’s home.
The authorities have not identified a suspect or person of interest as of Wednesday morning, according to a statement from the sheriff’s department. A source familiar with the investigation mentioned signs of forced entry into the home and evidence suggesting a nighttime abduction, but was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.
Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance Sparks Questions
Guthrie was reported missing after she failed to attend church on Sunday. Concerned by her absence, a church member contacted her family, leading them to search her home and alert the authorities. Initial search efforts included drones, dogs, and support from volunteers and Border Patrol; however, by Monday, the focus shifted to treating the site as a crime scene.
Personal belongings such as Guthrie’s cellphone, wallet, and car were left at her home, indicating a possible abduction. Investigators are reviewing area surveillance videos and license plate data, and analyzing cellphone tower information as part of their efforts. Despite multiple media outlets receiving purported ransom notes, officials have not confirmed any ransom demands publicly.
Community and Family Hold Onto Hope
In response to her mother’s disappearance, Savannah Guthrie has remained in Arizona, absent from her usual role on “Today.” Through social media, she has urged the community to “raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. Bring her home.”
Having grown up in Tucson, Savannah Guthrie has a personal connection to the area, as did her mother Nancy Guthrie. Viewers of the “Today” show have been introduced to Nancy Guthrie through her daughter’s stories, with Savannah crediting her mother as the family’s pillar following her father’s sudden death.
Nancy Guthrie had described Tucson as a “wonderful” place with a “laid back and gentle” atmosphere, reflecting the family’s deep roots in the community since the 1970s.
