Arizona Residents Await Decision on New Aluminum Plant Proposal

Residents of southern Arizona are set to hear from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) as plans for a new aluminum processing plant in Benson are discussed. The meeting, scheduled for Monday evening, will provide an opportunity for locals to learn more about the proposed facility and its environmental implications.

The proposed aluminum plant by Aluminum Dynamics is planned to span approximately 200 acres in Benson, located just off Highway 80 south of Tucson. The facility aims to process aluminum scrap metal, which will supply the company’s mill in Ohio, producing materials for sectors such as sustainable packaging and construction.

The air quality permit crucial for the project’s progression is currently under consideration by ADEQ. The agency has indicated that a water permit is unnecessary, as the plant will not release water into surface or groundwater systems.

Representatives from ADEQ will present the draft air quality permit at the meeting in Benson. Meanwhile, a petition on Change.org, voicing concerns over potential hazardous pollutants and threats to local communities and wildlife, has gathered over 2,000 signatures.
