As the holiday season comes to a close, families are beginning to explore their new gifts. However, a political advocacy group is issuing a caution about AI-enabled toys that promise companionship to children.
Rory Erlich, a representative from the Public Interest Research Group, which operates in around two dozen states including Arizona, emphasizes the need for more oversight on AI technologies. The group is actively campaigning for stricter regulations and heightened scrutiny in this area, as detailed in their media release.
Erlich highlights the privacy concerns associated with such toys: “A toy that children are talking to and having personal conversations with is going to collect a lot of sensitive data that includes recordings of a child’s voice and also the content of these conversations.”
To safeguard children’s privacy, Erlich recommends that parents and guardians establish clear boundaries and ensure robust parental controls are in place when these AI toys are in use.
