Arizona Voters to Decide on Mileage-Based Tax Ban
Arizona is preparing for a critical decision next year as voters will be asked to determine the future of mileage-based vehicle taxes in the state. This vote comes amidst ongoing discussions about how best to fund road maintenance across Arizona.
Currently, an 18-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax is a primary source of funding for road projects. However, the rise in electric vehicle adoption, which has tripled since 2020, is causing lawmakers to reconsider this funding method.
Republican Sen. Jake Hoffman is advocating for a permanent removal of mileage-based vehicle tax options, emphasizing that fuel taxes should be eliminated altogether. Hoffman stated, “Roads, infrastructure and public safety, that is the fundamental core responsibility of the government. We should stop spending and, in my opinion, wasting billions of dollars every single year and adequately fund our roads.”
To address these concerns, several transportation projects have been included in Arizona’s recently approved state budget.
