Arizona Celebrates Nation’s 250th Anniversary with Statewide Events

Arizona's America250 Commission, led by Marcus Carney, celebrates the 250th anniversary with events and an app, Passport250.
Arizona celebrations for 250th anniversary of the U.S. are already underway

As the nation marks its 250th birthday, various states, including Arizona, are launching their own commemorations. The Arizona America250 Commission has been created to drive these celebratory activities statewide. This commission, formed by appointments from Gov. Katie Hobbs, draws members from a wide range of Arizona communities, encompassing business, art, and tribal nations.

A member of this commission, Marcus Carney, who heads Visit Yuma, mentioned that numerous events and programs are already in motion. “The website is America250AZ.org. You can go on there and there is a calendar of events of all the different things around the state,” Carney explained.

Among these initiatives is an innovative app named Passport250. Describing the app, Carney noted, “There are 250 different locations around the state. They are museums, they are parks, they are restaurants, they are attractions, they are history-focused locations, and a lot of other stops around the state.”

The app is designed not only to promote tourism across all 15 counties but also to reward users with sticker prizes as they explore.

Interestingly, the commission has not received any state budget allocation. According to Carney, the funding has been sourced through sponsorships, community contributions, and volunteer efforts, supplemented by approximately $10,000 from federal sources.
