Arizona’s Long-Serving Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva Passes Away at 77

Arizona bids farewell to one of its most enduring political figures, Democratic U.S. Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. Known for his staunch advocacy for environmental protection, Grijalva’s passing on Thursday was attributed to complications from cancer treatments, as announced by his office.

Grijalva, aged 77, held a significant place in Arizona’s political landscape, being among the longest-serving members in the state’s history. During his tenure, he rose to prominence as the chair of the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee and remained its leading Democrat until earlier this year. In recent months, he had stepped back from his congressional duties to focus on his cancer treatment.

“From permanently protecting the Grand Canyon for future generations to strengthening the Affordable Care Act, his proudest moments in Congress have always been guided by community voices,” stated his office in a heartfelt announcement. Grijalva’s legacy is marked by his dedication to preserving Arizona’s natural resources and advocating for community-driven initiatives.

U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego paid tribute to Grijalva, highlighting his contributions as a voice for equality and his efforts in defending Arizona’s water rights, natural beauty, and indigenous tribes. “He stood up for Arizona’s water rights, natural beauty and tribes,” Gallego remarked, underscoring Grijalva’s commitment to his constituents.

This somber news follows the recent death of another Democratic House member, Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas, who passed away last week due to health complications.
