Circumventing Traditional Approaches: Arizona Democrats’ New Fundraising Strategy

In a novel move, prominent Democrats in Arizona have chosen to bypass the state’s central party structure, opting instead to raise funds through the Navajo County Democratic Committee. This decision comes amid internal discord and financial struggles within the state party.

Leading the charge is Missa Foy, chair of the Navajo County Democratic Committee, who is spearheading the Copper State Victory initiative. This coordinated fundraising campaign aims to support key figures such as Governor Katie Hobbs, Attorney General Kris Mayes, and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes as they seek reelection in 2026.

Foy views this approach as a short-term solution, noting that, “In 2028, we’ll be preparing for [the U.S] Senate as well as a presidential race, and that works better with the state party.” She anticipates a reintegration with the state party for the more significant elections ahead.

The Arizona Democratic Party’s current challenges could see a shift soon, with a vote on the horizon to potentially replace chair Robert Branscomb. This development follows a petition led by Steven Jackson, Chair of Legislative District 8 Democrats. Jackson has expressed support for Foy as a potential successor, though she has declined the prospect, stating, “I would not accept the nomination … It’s not a job I have the capacity for.”

As the situation unfolds, the political landscape in Arizona could witness significant changes, particularly as the next election cycles approach.
