Arizona Early Voting Begins: In-Person and Mail Ballots Highlighted

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona opens early in-person voting Wednesday, becoming the first presidential battleground state this year to allow residents to cast ballots at polling places before Election Day.

Both presidential campaigns are eyeing this key battleground, scheduling visits. Vice presidential nominees, Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, will hold events in Tucson on Wednesday.

Vice President Kamala Harris will rally in Phoenix Thursday, and former President Donald Trump plans a Sunday event in Prescott Valley, a Republican area 90 miles from Phoenix.

President Joe Biden narrowly defeated Trump by 10,457 votes in 2020, sparking misinformation and conspiracy theories. This has led to threats against election workers, prompting increased security measures.

Concerned about worker safety, some schools in Maricopa County declined to host polling locations. Early voting, especially mail voting, is popular in Arizona, with 80% voting before Election Day 2020.

All 15 Arizona counties must offer in-person voting sites through the Friday before the Nov. 5 election, with 12 centers in metro Phoenix. As of July, Arizona’s registered voters numbered 4.1 million, likely higher after party-led registration drives.

Early in-person voting has already begun in some states and starts next week in Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Nevada.
