Arizona Lawmakers Respond to Fatal ICE Shooting in Minnesota

The recent fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman in Minnesota, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has sparked a range of reactions among Arizona lawmakers. The incident, which took place on Wednesday in Minneapolis, has become a focal point for discussions about ICE’s role and conduct.

During an interview on KQNA Radio’s “Talk of the Town,” Congressman Eli Crane suggested that negative perceptions of ICE have influenced the situation. He stated, “I do believe after seeing, you know, multiple angles of this video that this officer will be exonerated.” His view is shared by Republican Congressman Andy Biggs, who is a gubernatorial candidate. Biggs attributed the incident to what he described as Democratic encouragement of violence against ICE, posting on X, “This is what happens when Democrats encourage violence against @ICEgov.”

Conversely, Senator Ruben Gallego voiced concerns about the training and professionalism of ICE agents. In a CNN interview, Gallego criticized the agency for spreading what he called the “propaganda of this presidency” rather than effectively enforcing immigration law. He argued that the agents contribute to chaos rather than order.

Both Crane and Gallego agree that a thorough investigation is necessary. Meanwhile, Democrats in the Arizona state house have urged Congress to launch an inquiry into the shooting, claiming inconsistencies between the Trump administration’s statements and video evidence from the scene. They expressed concern about the broader implications of such incidents, stating, “If a U.S. citizen exercising her fight of free speech can be killed by federal authorities with no consequence, then it can happen again to anyone, anywhere at any time.”

As of now, Republican leaders in Arizona’s state house and senate have not publicly commented on the incident. Conflicting accounts of the shooting persist, with administration officials asserting that Good attempted to ram the ICE agent, while eyewitnesses report she was moving away from the scene.

In a related development, Flagstaff resident Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas died under the custody of ICE on Sunday, further intensifying scrutiny over the agency’s practices.
