Veteran Arizona Senator Lela Alston Backs Christine Marsh for Senate Seat

As her long-standing tenure in the Arizona Senate concludes, Sen. Lela Alston (D-Phoenix) has announced her support for Christine Marsh, a former state senator, to succeed her. Alston, who has been a fixture in Arizona politics since 1977, is stepping down from her legislative role due to term limits.

Christine Marsh, a public educator and previous state senator, is vying for a comeback after losing her 2024 re-election bid in Arizona’s highly competitive 4th Legislative District. This district, known for its political volatility, is currently under Republican representation. Marsh has relocated to the more stable 5th Legislative District, where Alston resides.

Marsh expressed her motivation for the move, saying, “I was moving/downsizing anyway, and when I saw that the house I really wanted to get was in LD5, I decided to go for it.”

Although Alston cannot seek another term in the Senate, she has not ruled out the possibility of campaigning for a seat in the House of Representatives, indicating she might not be retiring from public service altogether.
