Arizona Introduces Lieutenant Governor Role for the First Time
In an unprecedented move for Arizona, voters will cast their ballots for a lieutenant governor in the upcoming November election. Previously, succession to the governor’s office was the responsibility of the secretary of state.
Mike Noble, from the polling firm Noble Predictive Insights, offers a skeptical view on the impact of this new role. “Even though it’s a new dynamic to Arizona elections,” he stated, “It’s going to be just like the vice presidential pick, which is a lot of talk, a lot of hub-bub. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t actually make an impact.”
Despite Noble’s reservations, the position of lieutenant governor may serve as a strategic platform for grooming future gubernatorial candidates. This change comes after a majority of Arizona voters supported the measure in 2022.
