Arizona’s New Turquoise Alert Leads to Swift Recovery of Missing Child
Arizona’s innovative Turquoise Alert system proved its effectiveness on Wednesday night when it played a crucial role in locating a missing child from Hawaii. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued this alert to track down Violet Coultas-Benson, a 6-year-old last seen at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on July 12.
The alert, which was promptly acted upon by law enforcement in Cottonwood, successfully led to the girl’s safe recovery. A spokesperson for the DPS confirmed the Turquoise Alert’s pivotal role in the operation.
This alert system, which Arizona introduced earlier this month, is specifically designed to issue notifications for missing Indigenous people. The legislative push for its implementation was significantly influenced by the case of Emily Pike, a San Carlos Apache tribal member whose murder case garnered national media attention earlier this year.
Originally intended for Indigenous populations, the scope of the Turquoise Alert has been broadened. It now includes any individual under the age of 65 who is missing under suspicious circumstances, further enhancing its utility in diverse situations.
