Bookmans Employees Solidify Union Contract After Extensive Negotiations

In a significant milestone for workers in Arizona, employees at Bookmans Entertainment Exchange locations in Flagstaff and Tucson have finalized a union contract after enduring prolonged discussions with company management.

The newly ratified three-year agreement includes provisions for wage enhancements, paid sick leave, bereavement time, and health coverage for all employees, whether full-time or part-time.

Tony Taurman, an employee from the Flagstaff store, expressed optimism, stating, “I feel hopeful for the future, excitement, and I’m so proud of my coworkers.”

Nearly 18 months ago, employees at the Flagstaff, Tucson East, and Tucson River Bookmans locations opted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW). This union also represents workers in Fry’s and Safeway stores throughout Arizona and has successfully organized staff at Barnes and Noble and Half Price Books in other regions.

Jim McLaughlin, President of the UFCW Union, emphasized the importance of the contract, saying it acknowledges the vital role of Bookmans employees and enhances the overall industry standard of living. “Bookmans employees have always been the key ingredient to the company’s success,” McLaughlin added.

Bookmans President Sean Feeney acknowledged the efforts involved in reaching the agreement, mentioning to KNAU, “We look forward to working with UFCW Local 99 to sustain the Bookmans tradition of being an asset to our communities and a supportive and engaging workplace for our dedicated staff.”

According to the organizers, this makes them the first booksellers in Arizona to unionize. Last year, employees at the three stores participated in a one-day strike, citing concerns that management was not taking the negotiation process seriously.

Grand Canyon National Park employees plan to file union paperwork with the Federal Labor Relations Board. It’s part of a larger move by park workers across the West to push back against the Trump administration’s cuts.
