Border Patrol Raid on Humanitarian Aid Camp in Arizona Raises Concerns
In a recent operation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents arrested three individuals at a humanitarian aid camp managed by No More Deaths, located in the Arizona borderlands. The camp is positioned in the expansive Sonoran Desert, just a few miles from the U.S.-Mexico border in southern Arizona.
The raid, which took place the Sunday before Thanksgiving, has sparked controversy due to claims by No More Deaths that Border Patrol agents entered the property and its trailers without a federal search warrant. This action marks a departure from previous raids in 2017 and 2020, where warrants were reportedly used. The absence of a warrant in the recent operation was criticized by Arizona Representative Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat, during a speech on the U.S. House floor.
According to CBP, one Guatemalan and two Mexican nationals were apprehended during the raid. While the agency did not disclose the reasons behind the operation or confirm the use of a warrant, it was reported that the Mexican nationals have been deported, and the Guatemalan national is currently in ICE custody, awaiting deportation.
