Chandler Integrates Waymo Self-Driving Cars into Public Transit System

Chandler, Arizona is charting new territory by integrating Waymo’s self-driving cars into its public transit offerings. This innovative move, made possible through a collaboration with Waymo and tech firm Via, aims to enhance the city’s transportation capacity.

The existing Chandler Flex service, which is powered by Via’s software and allows residents to book ridesharing vehicles, now includes the option to ride in a Waymo autonomous car. This choice is available particularly during peak demand periods when the city’s transportation needs are highest.

Jason Crampton, who manages transportation planning for Chandler, described this initiative as a historic first for Waymo. “This will be Waymo’s first public transit partnership in history. So we’re pretty excited about that. But in addition to just testing the autonomous vehicle, I think a big goal of this service coming is for cost savings,” he stated.

He highlighted that afternoons often experience a surge in transportation demand due to school, work, and appointments, positioning Waymo as an effective “overflow provider” to accommodate these needs.

Michael Vaccarino, Via’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized the strategic advantage of Waymo’s fleet. “Waymo has an incredible distribution of vehicles and at times of high peak demand, we want to be able to offer rides to anyone who asks and Waymo helps to unlock that,” he explained.

The Chandler Flex service is operational on weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering residents a flexible and modern transportation solution.
