Flood Control Measures Advance with New Funding in Coconino County
In a decisive move to protect communities east of Flagstaff, Coconino County officials have sanctioned $12 million to complete a crucial series of flood control projects. These measures became necessary after the Pipeline Fire, which devastated the region nearly three years ago.
The 2022 fire ravaged over 26 square miles of the San Francisco Peaks, stripping mountain slopes and forests of their vegetation. This left neighborhoods vulnerable to severe flooding as unchecked water cascaded down the barren slopes.
Efforts have been underway since the fire to mitigate these risks. Berms, drainpipes, and slope restorations have been implemented to control the rainwater flow during the wet season. The latest funding will facilitate the construction of final berms to divert water away from residential areas and Highway 89.
Overall, the flood control initiatives have received substantial backing, with more than $130 million allocated through federal and state grants across nine different projects.
