The Dragon Bravo Fire: Progress in Containment and Ongoing Challenges

Fire management teams have achieved a critical milestone in containing the expansive Dragon Bravo Fire, which is burning across Arizona. By Thursday, containment was reported at 29%, for a blaze that now covers more than 132,000 acres.

Efforts are ongoing to fortify lines at the Grand Canyon’s rim, aiming to steer the fire away from the northern forested areas that are densely packed with combustible materials. Hand crews are actively creating barriers on the Walhalla Plateau, a narrow extension of land from the North Rim that forms part of the fire’s southern boundary.

Thursday’s firefighting operations are being conducted under challenging conditions, with humidity levels between 10–15% and wind gusts reaching up to 35 miles per hour. In addition, temperatures are soaring into the hundreds in House Rock Valley and reaching the 80s on the Kaibab Plateau.

The Dragon Bravo Fire is being battled by nearly 1,400 firefighters, and the financial toll of the firefighting efforts has already reached almost $48 million.
