Dragon Bravo Fire Threatens Grand Canyon’s North Rim Amid Critical Weather Conditions

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim faces a significant threat as the Dragon Bravo Fire has expanded to cover more than 44,000 acres, exacerbated by several days of challenging fire weather. With essential infrastructure, including the Kaibab Lodge, at risk, firefighting teams are on high alert.

Efforts to protect the Kaibab Lodge and other structures are in full swing, as confirmed by the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team. Fire crews are strategically positioned around the lodge to ensure a rapid response, if necessary, owing to the increased fire activity driven by low humidity and strong winds.

The White Sage Fire, located just 35 miles to the south, is seeing improved containment, yet the Dragon Bravo Fire continues to pose a severe threat to areas near the Grand Canyon.

Lisa Jennings, representing the management team, emphasized the vigilance being maintained on the land surrounding the lodge. “Those areas are at risk. It is not near them now, but potentially in the future, if we don’t get the rainfall that we need, they could spread towards that area,” she stated.

To mitigate the risk, the team is implementing a range of preventative measures, including establishing fire lines, using heat-resistant wraps on structures, and installing roof sprinkler systems to counteract embers.

“We’ve been working for over a week for preventative measures knowing that this fire is pushing north and the Kaibab Lodge and the Entrance Station are on that northern end,” Jennings added. The Dragon Bravo Fire has previously inflicted damage, having burned the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim.
