Suspect Arrested in Connection to 900-Acre Wildfire Near Prescott
In a recent development, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has taken a Hillside resident into custody, accusing him of igniting a wildfire that has consumed over 900 acres of land near Prescott. The blaze, known as the Kirkland Fire, triggered pre-evacuation warnings for nearby areas, although these advisories were lifted by Monday morning.
Authorities report that the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was allegedly driving under the influence when his vehicle ended up in a ditch, resulting in a blown tire. The individual continued to drive for almost three miles on the metal rim, which reportedly caused sparks that ignited several fires along the roadway, including the Kirkland Fire.
The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management crews are actively working to control the fire, which is currently 35% contained. The fire is primarily burning through grass and brush, creating challenges due to the rough terrain. Firefighters are working on constructing fire lines and have plans to conduct controlled burns around the fire’s perimeter.
Low humidity and difficult terrain led to the postponement of planned backburns on Sunday night. Fire managers are considering conducting these burns on Monday night, depending on the conditions. The fire’s spread has been exacerbated by the hot, dry weather and strong winds, which have pushed it northeast.
Efforts to contain the fire include utilizing several roads as barriers to prevent further spread. The situation remains dynamic as crews adapt their strategies to the evolving conditions.
