Wildfires Prompt Evacuations at Grand Canyon’s North Rim
Evacuations have been ordered for staff and residents at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park due to the increasing threat posed by the Dragon Bravo Fire. This follows earlier evacuation directives related to the White Sage Fire, which impacted areas north of the park.
On Thursday evening, nearly 500 visitors were compelled to evacuate as the fires continued to spread. The affected evacuation zone now encompasses an area of approximately 980 square miles, stretching from the Utah border in the north to the North Rim in the south, House Rock Valley to the east, and the boundary of Kaibab National Forest to the west.
Originating from a lightning strike, the Dragon Bravo Fire has been active for nearly a week. Initially managed to support forest health, the fire’s expansion has become a concern. It was reported at about 150 acres as of Thursday evening, with further growth since then.
As a result of these fires, U.S. Highway 89A remains closed between Fredonia and Bitter Springs, affecting travel in the area.
