Advocates Applaud Jon Kyl’s Transparency and Push for Legislative Action on Dementia

In the wake of former U.S. Senator Jon Kyl’s recent disclosure of his dementia diagnosis, there is a growing call for increased awareness and legislative measures in Arizona. Advocacy groups emphasize the importance of his candidness and the need for comprehensive support systems.

Responding to Kyl’s revelation, the Alzheimer’s Association in Phoenix is proactively collaborating with state legislators on two significant bills aimed at enhancing dementia care and support. The first proposed bill seeks to enhance training for clinicians, enabling them to diagnose dementia earlier and more accurately. This initiative would empower families to better prepare, pursue treatments, and avail themselves of necessary support services.

The second legislative effort focuses on integrating the state’s Dementia Services Program into the Arizona statute, ensuring its permanence. This program is designed to revitalize the state’s Alzheimer’s Plan, streamline dementia-related activities across various agencies, and promote strategies for early detection, risk minimization, and caregiver assistance.
