Brewery or boo-ry? Tempe pub Four Peaks serves up scares

In the heart of Tempe, a historical creamery turned brewery offers more than just craft beer; it serves up a chilling experience that attracts paranormal enthusiasts. Four Peaks Brewery, housed in a 130-year-old building, recently opened its doors for a ghostly tour that promises to send shivers down the spine.

The tour kicks off in the dimly lit cellars, where the ambient hum of machinery sets an eerie tone. According to Pub Events Manager Carter Nacke, the brewery is home to at least five spirits. “We’ve had people see full body people, shadow people. They’ve been touched. They’ve had phantom smells. They like, feel really creeped out. You feel like you’re being followed,” he explained.

While the ghostly encounters add intrigue, a real-life tragedy also looms over the brewery. A train accident at the nearby Eighth Street crossing claimed the lives of two men, as documented in an 1898 newspaper article. This historical incident adds a layer of authenticity to the tales circulating within the brewery’s walls.

The tour also delves into the life of Victor Vogel, who took charge of the creamery in 1929. Although Vogel passed away in 1972, the head brewer claims to have conversed with him in 1995, adding to the site’s mystique.

Marketing Director Trevor Needle noted the unsettling atmosphere that envelops the brewery after dark. “There’s just these little, kind of almost hair raising moments that you kind of just want to get the heck out of there,” he remarked.

The final stop on the tour led attendees to an abandoned brewers’ office, locked away following reports of supernatural activity. Inside, a mannequin drenched in fake blood startled many, eliciting screams from the group.
