A Halt on Immigration Policy Shift Sparks Legal Battle

In a significant judicial decision, a federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s initiative to terminate legal status for thousands of immigrants in the U.S. under temporary humanitarian measures.

The Trump administration had previously sought to dismantle a series of programs initiated during the Biden era. These programs allowed certain immigrants to reside and work in the United States under the humanitarian parole system.

Hillary Li, an attorney from the Justice Action Center, which is challenging this policy change, emphasized the historical context of the humanitarian parole authority. “The humanitarian parole authority has been used for more than 70 years to provide safe, legal pathways to the U.S. for people often escaping war, political strife or natural disasters in their countries of origin,” she stated during a press call discussing the lawsuit.

Li further highlighted the implications of the administration’s move, noting, “The bottom line here is that people who obtained the government’s permission to be here, to reunite with family members, contribute to the economy, work to support themselves, are now being told they will lose status in just a few weeks.”

The recent policy shift affected over 500,000 individuals from countries including Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, who were on a humanitarian parole program. These individuals were initially given a 30-day notice to depart the U.S.

However, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani questioned the legality of this directive and has ordered a pause on the enforcement of the deadline.
