Flagstaff Enhances City Council Meeting Security with New Metal Detectors

In a bid to enhance safety measures, the City of Flagstaff has introduced a requirement for attendees of city council meetings to pass through a metal detector before entering the council chambers.

The newly acquired device, sourced from OpenGate, aims to streamline the security process with an efficient walk-through weapons screening. For individuals unable to use the machine, security staff will deploy a handheld metal detector.

Previously, security measures were limited to manual bag inspections.

“We’ve always had safe meetings. We want to continue to have safe meetings. That’s always been our goal,” stated Flagstaff Public Works Director Scott Overton. “So, we just think this is one more nice addition that uses a good technology that’s becoming more affordable for most communities.”

Overton mentioned that the decision to purchase metal detectors was informed by observing security protocols in other local governments. He emphasized that this was a proactive measure and not triggered by any specific incident.

The metal detector system was first implemented during the city council meeting on January 6th.

Flagstaff authorities have clarified that firearms are prohibited inside City Hall, and lockers are provided at the entrance for secure storage.
