New Temple Plans Emerge Amid Community Concerns in Flagstaff
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has unveiled plans for a new temple in Flagstaff, Arizona, marking a significant addition to their religious sites in the state. The temple will be located at the intersection of Butler Avenue and South Fourth Street, occupying a 10.43-acre parcel.
The proposed Flagstaff Temple will be a single-story structure, encompassing 18,850 square feet, along with an additional ancillary building. While the project remains in the early planning phase, specific timelines for groundbreaking and completion have not been disclosed.
Distinct from regular chapels, Latter-day Saint temples are considered sacred spaces, accessible only to church members once they are officially dedicated. This planned construction has sparked opposition within the community, primarily due to concerns about its impact on Flagstaff’s renowned dark-sky designation. An online petition opposing the development has gathered over 3,000 signatures.
The announcement of the Flagstaff Temple was first made public in April 2025. Arizona currently hosts six Latter-day Saint temples, with three additional sites planned. Among these, the Snowflake Temple is the sole operational temple in northern Arizona.
According to church officials, Arizona is home to approximately 450,000 Latter-day Saints, distributed across more than 900 congregations.
