Flash Floods in Cordes Lakes: One Rescued, Another Still Missing

In a dramatic series of events in Cordes Lakes, an elderly man’s attempt to navigate through the swift waters of Big Bug Creek ended in peril. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident on Tuesday afternoon, detailing the rescue of one man while another remains unaccounted for.

The incident began when an elderly driver, identified as a 70-year-old local resident, attempted to drive his small sedan across the rapidly moving floodwaters at the intersection of East Fremont Drive and Thunderbird Trail.

The vehicle was quickly overcome by the current, overturning as it was swept away. Deputies discovered the car being carried downstream, with two men clinging to or near its trunk. Notably, one of these men was a bystander who had tried to come to the driver’s aid. A deputy successfully rescued the bystander, pulling him to safety just before the car was swept further away.

Search teams later located the vehicle two miles from the crossing, but the driver was no longer with it. Authorities have not released the missing man’s name but confirmed through a family member that he had left his home around 3 p.m. and never arrived at his intended destination.

Efforts to locate the missing man are ongoing, with search operations extending to both Big Bug Creek and the Agua Fria River. Authorities urge the public to steer clear of Big Bug Creek to ensure safety and allow emergency crews to continue their work without interference.
