Former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich Passes Away at 59
The passing of Mark Brnovich, Arizona’s former Attorney General, has been announced. On Tuesday afternoon, a family representative confirmed the news, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
“It is with profound sorrow that the Brnovich family announces the passing of Mark Brnovich,” the family shared in a statement. Known as a staunch advocate of justice, Brnovich served as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General and was also a state and federal prosecutor. The statement continued, “He will forever be remembered and cherished by us as a beloved father, husband, son, and brother. We are heartbroken with this loss and are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from so many wonderful people across the state and country.” The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning, with details on memorial services to be announced later.
Brnovich’s career in public service began when he was elected as Attorney General in 2014, a position he held until 2023. His extensive legal career included roles as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona and assistant attorney general. He also led the state Department of Gaming.
In a political bid in 2022, Brnovich ran for the U.S. Senate, although he was defeated in the Republican primary by Blake Masters.
In 2025, under President Donald Trump’s administration, he was nominated as ambassador to Serbia. However, his nomination was retracted in October of the same year.
Brnovich’s heritage traces back to his Serbian immigrant parents, who settled in the United States before his birth.
The legal community and many across Arizona mourn the loss of Brnovich, who had a significant impact on the state’s legal landscape.
