Efforts to Combat Light Pollution in Maricopa County Gain Momentum

Maricopa County, known for some of the worst air quality in the United States according to the American Lung Association, is now also grappling with the growing issue of light pollution. As urban development continues in the Phoenix area, initiatives are emerging to address this lesser-known form of contamination.

Fountain Hills, a town already recognized as an International Dark Sky Community since 2018, is taking significant steps to preserve its night skies. The community is working on establishing a Dark Sky Discovery Center within its civic precinct.

Set to become a new highlight in Arizona’s thriving astro-tourism sector, the Discovery Center is expected to draw interest from both space enthusiasts and those keen on revitalizing the town’s appeal. Recently, a large telescope with a mirror exceeding 27 inches in diameter was installed in the center, which is still under construction. This development is pivotal for both public education and global research access.

“We are hoping this kind of education kind of spills out into the surrounding area so other communities can learn how to preserve our dark skies,” explained Joe Bill, president of the Discovery Center board.

The telescope aims to serve not only as a public attraction but also as a resource for researchers worldwide. The Discovery Center will feature a planetarium, lecture theater, and exhibit hall upon completion.

“We are being followed internationally by people around the world watching our progress. Because we are on the front edge of a global movement to preserve dark skies,” Bill noted, highlighting the global attention the project is receiving.

The opening of the center is anticipated by the middle of next year, marking a significant milestone in the community’s effort to combat light pollution and promote sustainable development.
