Firefighters Gain Control Over Horton Fire Near Payson

Efforts to contain the Horton Fire, which has been burning near Payson, are nearing completion. The wildfire, which spans 8,346 acres, achieved 80% containment over the weekend, according to officials.

Firefighters are now focusing on suppression repair tasks as the operation scales down. A Type 3 team from the Tonto National Forest will resume command. Their ongoing efforts include identifying and extinguishing any remaining hot spots to prevent the fire from breaching containment lines.

In a recent update, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced the removal of lane restrictions on State Route 260. Nearby communities that were previously on high alert for potential evacuations have been downgraded to “READY” status.

Despite these positive developments, the forest closure remains active. Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke in the vicinity for several days as areas of vegetation within the fire’s perimeter continue to burn.
