Winter storm creates icy road conditions, triggers school delays

The Arizona region is grappling with challenging winter weather conditions, with icy roads causing disruptions across several key highways. Early Friday morning, the Arizona Department of Transportation noted hazardous conditions on several roads, which has led to numerous incidents and travel advisories.

In eastern Arizona, Highway 60 and State Route 260 near Show Low are affected by snow and ice. Similarly, Interstate 40 near Joseph City and Petrified Forest National Park is experiencing winter weather conditions. Travelers are encouraged to check az511.gov or dial 511 for the latest updates on road conditions.

Further complicating matters, the Navajo Police Department has reported multiple accidents and vehicles sliding off roads near the Arizona-New Mexico border. A semi-truck incident on Highway 491 near Newcomb, N.M., has partially obstructed the southbound lanes. Authorities highlight that Navajo Route 9 West and Route 11 from Church Rock to Smith Lake, along with State Routes 371 north to Crownpoint and 602, are covered with ice and snow. Drivers are advised to proceed with caution due to strong, cold winds in these areas.

SCHOOL DELAYS

Due to the adverse weather and road conditions, several schools in the region have modified their schedules for Friday, January 9. Both Flagstaff and Prescott unified school districts have announced a two-hour delay in starting times. The Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) will maintain its regular full-day dismissal schedule, while Prescott Unified School District (PUSD) will end at its usual Friday time.

Additionally, the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy will commence later than usual, and the Montessori School of Flagstaff has also announced a delay, with early childcare not available. Flagstaff Junior Academy, however, has canceled all classes for the day.
