Investigation Underway Following Tragic Death of Navajo Nation Child

The search for 8-year-old Maleeka “Mollie” Boone, who was reported missing in the Coalmine community, ended in tragedy when authorities found her body. The Navajo Police Department is working alongside federal and state agencies to investigate her death.

Boone was last observed playing near the Coalmine Navajo Housing Authority around 6 p.m. on Thursday. Her extended absence prompted her family, who noted it was uncharacteristic for her to be away for so long, to worry for her safety.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety released a Turquoise Alert early on Friday, signaling that Boone’s disappearance was under peculiar or suspicious conditions.

By Friday afternoon, the FBI confirmed Boone’s body was located in the Coalmine area. As of Monday, there has been no public disclosure regarding possible causes of death or any arrests.

A GoFundMe page created to help cover funeral expenses for 8-year-old Maleeka “Mollie” Boone, who was found dead in the Coalmine community on the Navajo Nation on Jan. 16, 2026.

The family of the young girl, who described her as “always full of sunshine,” has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with the expenses for her funeral. “She was very loving, happy, and gave the biggest hugs,” the page states. “She was very special to us all and loved by many.”

The ongoing investigation is being led by the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations and the FBI’s Phoenix Field Office, with support from additional local and state agencies.
