Jay Feely Shifts Congressional Bid to District 1 on Trump’s Advice

Jay Feely, former NFL kicker, shifts his Congressional run to AZ District 1, following Trump's advice to avoid District 5.
GOP candidate Jay Feely swaps Arizona congressional races

In a surprising political shift, former NFL kicker Jay Feely has decided to contest for a Congressional seat in a new district. This move comes after heeding advice from former President Donald Trump, marking a change from his initial plans.

Feely initially set his sights on Arizona’s District 5, aiming to fill the vacancy left by Rep. Andy Biggs, who is pursuing a gubernatorial bid. However, the race took a turn when former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb entered the fray with Trump’s endorsement.

Faced with this development, Trump suggested that Feely explore opportunities in another district.

The political landscape further shifted when Rep. David Schweikert announced his own gubernatorial aspirations, leaving his seat in Congressional District 1 open. This district includes areas such as north Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Fountain Hills.

“After nearly a quarter century in professional football, I know that no one player is more important than the well being of the team. In this moment, the best way I can serve our GOP team is to defend this crucial Republican seat,” Feely stated.

Feely will compete against state representative Joseph Chaplik and Gina Swoboda, the Trump-endorsed chair of the Arizona Republican Party, in the Republican primary.

Chris Baker, a consultant for Swoboda, downplayed Feely’s chances, stating, “If Gilbert carpetbagger Jay Feely foolishly thinks he can win in AZ01, then more power to him I guess. But the outcome won’t change — Gina Swoboda will win the Republican primary.”

Chaplik officially entered the race on Monday.

As of the latest updates, Trump has not made any public comments regarding the candidacies of either Chaplik or Feely in District 1. However, he is known for endorsing multiple candidates in past elections, including both Biggs and lobbyist Karrin Taylor Robson for the 2026 gubernatorial race.
